Overview

Bulguksa Temple is a representative relic of Buddhist culture from the Silla Kingdom. Built on the slopes of Mount Tohamsan, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 along with Seokguram Grotto. The temple complex is considered a masterpiece of the Golden Age of Buddhist art, symbolizing the Buddhist utopia on earth through its exquisite stone architecture.

History

While original construction began in the 6th century, the temple was significantly expanded and rebuilt in 751 (during the reign of King Gyeongdeok) under the supervision of Prime Minister Kim Dae-seong. Kim is said to have built Bulguksa for his parents in his current life. Most of the wooden structures were destroyed during the Imjin War (1592), but the magnificent stone foundations and pagodas survived. Major restoration efforts in the 20th century returned the temple to its current grandeur.
