About

About
Even after Gwanghwamun was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War, the street in front of Gwanghwamun was the central government office street where the palace offices were gathered. Gwanghwamun was restored when King Gojong rebuilt Gyeongbokgung Palace, but was forcibly relocated to the east of Gyeongbokgung Palace when the Japanese Government-General of Korea was established within Gyeongbokgung Palace after the forced annexation of Korea in 1910. During the Third Republic, Gwanghwamun was rebuilt with concrete, and controversy over its location and construction materials continued until it was properly restored to its original location in 2008 through historical research. Gwanghwamun was destroyed and restored several times, but even during these times, the street in front of Gwanghwamun was still the central space of the Republic of Korea, the most important place where people gathered, met, and exchanged news and opinions, and it emerged as a symbol of democracy and a space of harmony through various modern and contemporary history. With the restoration of Gwanghwamun, the street in front of Gwanghwamun took on the appearance of a plaza for the first time in 2009, in line with the meaning and function of the place. ‘Gwanghwamun Square’, which reopened in August 2022, inherits the historical significance and depth of the street in front of Gwanghwamun, such as resolving the long-held national wish of restoring Wolde, and at the same time, it is expected to receive the full love of the citizens as a representative place of life for Seoul citizens that connects everyday life such as rest and walks with extraordinary life such as festivals and events.
