About

About
This temple was founded in the 14th year of King Jinheung's reign in Silla (553 AD) by Master Uisin, who returned from studying in Tang China. There is a legend that Uisin brought Buddhist scriptures on his donkey when he returned, and so it was called Beopjusa Temple. There are many valuable cultural assets within the temple grounds, such as the large two-story Daeungbojeon, the uniquely styled Wontongbojeon, iron danggan, and pagodas, but it is easy to pass by because of the Palsangjeon, the only existing wooden pagoda, and the 33m-tall giant Buddha statue. Although it is not as noticeable as other buildings and large Buddha statues, the twin lion stone lantern and stone lotus pond, which are designated as national treasures, are also valuable relics. National Treasure No. 55, Palsangjeon of Beopjusa Temple, is the only five-story wooden pagoda remaining in Korea that was built before the modern era. It was burned down once during the Imjin War, but was rebuilt in the second year of King Injo's reign (1624) under the leadership of the monk Byeokam Gakseong. In 2018, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name of ‘Sansa, Korean Mountain Monasteries’.
