About
Tradition and scenery preserved in a village for 400 years, Daegu Choi Clan Village. Located about 20 minutes from the city center, Otgol Village is a traditional village representing Daegu City. It is a village that has continued for 400 years since Choi Dong-jip, the son of Choi Gye, who made great contributions as a leader of the volunteer army during the Imjin War and the tutor of King Hyojong, settled here. There are about 20 old houses, including Baekbulgotaek, the oldest house in Daegu, Sugudang, Donggyejeong, and Choi Heung-won Jeongryeogak. The pretty stone walls that run along the alleys of the village are earthen walls with stones placed in between, and are designated as National Registered Cultural Property No. 266. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the villagers who have silently preserved their old appearance, Otgol Village is still beautiful. At the entrance to the village, a zelkova forest catches the eye. It is a Biborim that was cultivated to block bad energy according to feng shui. Dozens of Zelkova trees over 350 years old grow in a group. The name comes from the strange rock that rises on the peak of the mountain behind the village, which resembles a turtle. It is said that the pond was built in a place where you can see Saengguam well, according to the geomantic theory that turtles need water. The stone wall road that harmonizes with the tiled roofs of the old houses creates a nostalgic atmosphere. The house at the innermost part of the village where the stone wall ends is Baekbulgotaek, the head house of the Gyeongju Choi clan. Built in 1694, this house is considered the oldest house in Daegu. The Bobondang, visible to the right of Baekbulgotaek, is a historic place where Mr. Ryu Hyeong-won completed the proofreading of Bangyesurok. Leaving Bobondang leads to Donggyejeong, where his descendants studied. Surrounded by valleys and lush mountain slopes, this is a famous spot considered to have the most beautiful scenery in the village.
