About
About
It is a temple located in Jisan-ri, Habuk-myeon, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, and is the headquarters of the 15th diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It is one of the Three Jewel Temples of Korea and one of the Eight Great General Forests. It is also called Bulbo Temple because it has Jeokmyeolbogung, where the Buddha's sarira is enshrined. The other two of the Three Jewel Temples are Haeinsa Temple and Songgwangsa Temple. The World Heritage Committee (WHC), which determines the registration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, registered the mountain temples and Korean mountain monasteries as World Heritage sites at its 42nd meeting held in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, on June 30, 2018. The mountain temples that Korea has applied for registration include Tongdosa Temple in Yangsan, Buseoksa Temple in Yeongju, Bongjeongsa Temple in Andong, Beopjusa Temple in Boeun, and Magoksa Temple in Gongju. What is unique is that, despite the long history of the temples and the many buildings preserved since the Joseon Dynasty, they have not been designated as historic sites and are only designated as monuments of Gyeongsangnam-do. It is the central temple of the Gyeyul sect and was founded by Jajang. The place where Tongdosa is located is called Yeongchuksan Mountain, and it is said that its name was taken from it because it resembles Yeongchuksan Mountain in the Raja city of Magadha, India, where Sakyamuni preached. As it is considered one of the three major temples in Korea, it is a treasure trove of Korean Buddhist cultural assets due to its large size and many buildings and cultural assets. There are a total of 65 buildings within the temple grounds, and it houses about 30,000 cultural assets, including 1 national treasure, 21 treasures, and 46 local tangible cultural assets. The beautiful valley and the road leading up to the temple along it are very beautiful. The hermitages behind Tongdosa also have outstanding scenery.
