About
Cheonjiyeon Falls is a waterfall located in Seogwi-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. The name ‘Cheonjiyeon’ means ‘a pond formed by the meeting of the sky and the earth.’
The cliffs of the waterfall are made of andesite mixed with trachyte formed by volcanic activity. The width of the waterfall is about 12 m, the height is 22 m, and the depth of the pond is about 20 m. The valley is covered with a dense forest of various subtropical and temperate evergreen trees and ferns.
Near the waterfall, there is a habitat for the Mutae eel, which was designated as Natural Monument No. 27. However, the Mutae eel was delisted from the Natural Monument in 2009, and only its habitat is protected as a Natural Monument.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network (GGN) certified nine geological sites on Jeju Island as Global Geoparks after evaluating and deliberation on candidate sites at the Steering Committee held on the Greek island of Lesbos. After that, in 2014, three more representative attractions were designated: Udo, Biyangdo, and Seonheul Gotjawal. Jeju Island has been recognized as a global geopark because of its high value as a world natural heritage site, and among them, 12 places including Hallasan are representative geological attractions (three natural heritage areas - Hallasan, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Manjanggul - and six areas - Cheonjiyeon Falls, Seogwipo Formation, Daepodong Coast Columnar Joints, Sanbangsan, Yongmeori, and Suwolbong - were added as attractions). In particular, Cheonjiyeon Falls shows the geological appearance of a waterfall that conveys the process of erosion of sedimentary layers and the formation of valleys and waterfalls.
