About
About
It is a palace site from the Unified Silla period located in the area of 517 Inwang-dong, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and is widely known as Anapji. It is designated as Historic Site No. 18 of the Republic of Korea. Originally, this was a separate palace of Silla, where the crown prince of Silla lived. The name Donggung (Donggung) was given because it is located to the east of Gyeongju Wolseong, the main palace of Silla, and Gyeongju Wolseong is located just southwest of this palace. It is adjacent to Gyeongju Wolseong, the main palace where the king lives, to the northeast, but is currently separated by Wonhwa-ro. It is also located to the southwest of Hwangryongsa Temple. It is also very close to the current Gyeongju National Museum.
The palace had dozens of pavilions during the Unified Silla period, but now only three buildings, Building Sites 1, 3, and 5, have been restored.
Also, the symbol of this place is an artificial lake called 'Wolji', but in fact, it is much better known as the Wolji lake and pavilion, which was called 'Anapji' in the past, rather than the image of the palace. It is one of the representative ancient Korean buildings, and the original form of the Unified Silla garden style has been well preserved, and many valuable relics that provide insight into the architecture and lifestyle of the time have been found. Usually, other ancient relics in Korea are often excavated from tombs, but the relics found here are characterized by the fact that many practical items were found, such as doorknobs, hangers, scissors, combs, wooden tablets used as attendance cards, salted seafood manufacturing date tags, and various utensils that were actually used.
