About

About
Jongmyo is a Confucian shrine where the ancestral tablets of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty are enshrined and ancestral rites are performed. It is located at 1, Hunjeong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and is designated as a historic site of the Republic of Korea and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located to the south of Changdeokgung Palace and Changgyeonggung Palace. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was connected to the palace, but it was cut off when a road was built during the Japanese colonial period, and is currently connected by an overpass. There is a theory that Jongmyo was built on the east side of the palace, but it is actually located on the east side of Gyeongbokgung Palace (the main palace).
The value of Jongmyo's buildings and the ceremonial events held there for over 600 years were recognized, and it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Jongmyo Jerye (Important Intangible Cultural Property) and the music played during the ceremonies, Jongmyo Jeryeak (Important Intangible Cultural Property, composed by King Sejong), were registered as UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. Jongmyo Jerye is held as a memorial service by the Jeonju Yi clan, along with a royal procession, on the first Sunday in May every year.
