Overview
Changdeokgung Palace was built in 1405 as a secondary palace but served as the primary residence for Joseon kings for over 270 years. It is widely praised for its unique layout that blends seamlessly with the surrounding topography, unlike the symmetrical design of Gyeongbokgung. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 for its exceptional architecture and garden design.
History
Commissioned by King Taejong, the palace was designed to embrace the natural curves of the foot of Bugaksan Mountain. Although it was burned down during the Imjin War (1592), it was the first palace to be reconstructed (in 1610) and became the main seat of government until Gyeongbokgung was rebuilt in the late 19th century. It is the best-preserved of the five remaining royal Joseon palaces.
