Chicken Gizzard Alley
Daegu
In the 1970s, the emergence of numerous renowned poultry farms and large-scale slaughterhouses, particularly in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, created a fertile environment for the development of chicken dishes. In 1972, Lee Du-yeong and Na Chun-seon, a couple who ran a slaughterhouse in the area where Sam-A Tongdak currently stands, created the modern-day Dak-Ddong-Jip (chicken gizzard skewer) Fritters. Daegu Pyeonghwa Market is the only market in Korea that has achieved immense popularity and recognition simply by being called "Dak-Ddong-Jip Alley." The headquarters of Mexican and Pelicana, which once had franchises nationwide, were located in Daegu, as were the headquarters of Kyochon Chicken and Hosik Chicken, two of the current market leaders.
