Seokbulsa

Overview

Seokbulsa, meaning "Stone Buddha Temple," is a unique Buddhist sanctuary nestled against the dramatic cliffs of Geumjeongsan Mountain. Unlike traditional wooden temples, Seokbulsa is renowned for its monumental relief carvings etched directly into the natural sandstone faces of "Byeongpungam" (Folding Screen Rock). It offers a mystical atmosphere and one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Busan's urban landscape.

History

Founded in 1930 (some records say 1927) by the monk Jo Il-hyeon, Seokbulsa is relatively modern compared to ancient Korean temples. However, its artistic value is immense. Jo Il-hyeon spent decades meticulously carving 29 Buddhist figures into the cliffs, blending modern craftsmanship with traditional Buddhist themes. Originally called Byeongpungam Hermitage, its name was changed to Seokbulsa to honor the sheer number and beauty of these stone reliefs.

• **The Great Relief Carvings**: Towering 10-meter-tall figures of Maitreya, Avalokitesvara, and the Four Guardian Kings carved into the U-shaped cliff walls.

• **The 16 Nahan (Disciples)**: Intricate carvings of the 16 original disciples of Buddha located along the steep stairs leading to the upper sanctum.

• **Cave Shrines**: Small, peaceful prayer spaces tucked into natural rock crevices, lit by candles and offering a cool, serene retreat.

• **The Stone Arched Gate**: A unique entrance reminiscent of an ancient fortress gate, built entirely of stone.
