Overview

Magoksa Temple is the head temple of the 6th district of the Jogye Order. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018 under "Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea," it is famous for its "Taegeuk" layout where the Magokcheon stream divides the temple into northern and southern compounds.

History

Founded in 640 AD by Master Jajang during the Silla Dynasty, the temple has survived numerous wars. It holds deep historical significance as the refuge of Baekbeom Kim Gu, a leader of the Korean independence movement, who took the Buddhist name 'Wonjong' and lived here after escaping from prison in the late 19th century.
