Overview
Sungnyemun is the southern main gate of the historic Fortress Wall of Seoul. It is the oldest surviving wooden structure in Seoul and stands as a major symbol of the city's heritage and resilience, having been fully restored after the 2008 fire.
History
It was originally built in 1398 during the reign of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty. The gate embodies the architectural style of the early Joseon period. Its name is derived from 'Ye' (禮, propriety/rite), one of the Five Virtues. The structure was rebuilt in 2013 after a tragic arson attack.
