Gimhae Daeseong-dong Ancient Tombs

Overview

The Daeseong-dong Tumuli is the primary burial ground for the ruling class of Geumgwan Gaya, the leading polity of the early Gaya Confederacy. Situated on a low hill known as 'Aeguji,' the site contains hundreds of tombs that reveal the social hierarchy and political structure of ancient Gaya. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023 along with six other Gaya tumuli clusters.

History

Developed between the 1st and 5th centuries, these tombs provide evidence of Gimhae's role as a major hub for international trade. Excavations have unearthed artifacts from China (bronze mirrors), Manchuria (bronze cauldrons), and Japan (ceremonial objects), proving that Geumgwan Gaya was a maritime power. The transition from wooden coffin tombs to large-scale wooden chamber tombs marks the growth of the kingdom's centralized authority.
