Overview

Beomeosa Temple is one of the three major temples in the Yeongnam region (alongside Haeinsa and Tongdosa) and serves as the headquarters of the 14th district of the Jogye Order. Located on the eastern edge of Geumjeongsan Mountain, it is famous for its "Golden Well" (Geumsaem) legend, where a golden fish descended from heaven to play. The name Beomeosa literally means "Temple of the Nirvana Fish."

History

Founded in 678 by the great monk Uisang during the reign of King Munmu of the Silla Dynasty, Beomeosa was established as a 'Bibo' temple to protect the nation from maritime invasions. Although most buildings were destroyed during the Imjin War (1592), the temple was reconstructed in 1613. Throughout history, it has been a center for Zen (Seon) Buddhism and was a key site for the Buddhist independence movement during the Japanese colonial era.
