Ancient Tombs Songhak-dong

Overview

The Goseong Songhak-dong Tumuli is a representative cemetery of Sogaya, a political entity of the Gaya Confederacy that thrived in the Goseong area between the late 5th and early 6th centuries. It consists of seven large mounds located on the low hills of Mugisan Mountain. These tombs are renowned for their unique "horizontal-style stone chambers" and are considered a monumental symbol of the ancient maritime power of Sogaya.

History

Designated as a Historic Site of Korea in 1963 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023, these mounds were built using advanced civil engineering techniques, such as the "rammed earth" method (layering different types of soil). The site provides crucial evidence of the maritime exchanges Sogaya maintained with neighboring Japan and the Baekje Kingdom. Its preservation reflects the distinct political system of the Gaya Confederacy, where multiple polities coexisted as autonomous equals.

• The **Mound No. 1**: The largest and most iconic tomb in the cluster, once mistakenly thought to be a keyhole-shaped tomb but confirmed to be three interconnected round mounds.

• The **Panoramic Night View**: The mounds are subtly illuminated at night, creating a mysterious and serene atmosphere that contrasts with the surrounding modern town.
