Ganjeolgot

Overview

Ganjeolgot is a headland famous for being the first place to see the sunrise on the Eurasian continent's eastern edge. It is a premier sunrise destination in Korea, known for the "Ganjeolgot Lighthouse" that has guided ships since 1920. The park features vast green fields, dramatic coastal cliffs, and various sculptures, making it a popular spot for both early morning tourists and weekend picnickers.

History

The name "Ganjeol" (간절) comes from the shape of the land jutting out into the sea, which resembles a long bamboo pole used to pick fruit. Since ancient times, it has been a landmark for fishermen. In modern times, it became famous after scientific measurements proved that the sun rises here earlier than at Homigot or Jeongdongjin. Every year on January 1st, the Ganjeolgot Sunrise Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to make wishes for the new year.

• **Large Wish Mailbox**: A 5-meter-tall mailbox that is the symbol of Ganjeolgot. Visitors can actually send postcards from here, and it is a must-visit photo zone.

• **Ganjeolgot Lighthouse**: First lit in 1920, this beautiful white lighthouse houses a small museum and offers a panoramic view of the East Sea.

• **Windmill Park**: A European-style windmill situated in a wide grassy field, creating a picturesque atmosphere that feels like a scene from a movie.

• **Drama House**: A filming location for several Korean dramas, offering a classic Western-style building and beautiful interior displays.

• **Coastal Road Drive**: The drive along the Seoseng-myeon coastline toward Ganjeolgot is considered one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Ulsan.

• **Try 'Seoseng Pear' & Seafood**: Visit the nearby local markets to taste the famous Seoseng pears or fresh seafood directly caught by Haenyeo (sea women).

• **Write a Wish Postcard**: Use the postcards available nearby to write a message to your future self and drop it in the giant mailbox.
