Songhae Park

Overview

Songhae Park is an ecological park centered around Okyeonji Reservoir. It was named after the legendary Korean TV host Song Hae, whose wife’s hometown was nearby. The park is famous for its 3.5km-long waterfront trail (Dulle-gil), unique landmarks like the "Baeksegyo" (100-year) Bridge, and vibrant seasonal flowers that attract over 750,000 visitors annually.

History

The park was established in 2016 through a collaboration between Dalseong-gun and Song Hae, who served as an honorary citizen of the district. It transformed a simple agricultural reservoir into a cultural hub. In 2021, the Songhae Exhibition Hall was added to commemorate his life and career, further cementing the park's status as a place where nature meets modern Korean cultural history.

Things to see

• **Baeksegyo Bridge & Baeksejung Pavilion**: A winding bridge over the water that symbolizes longevity. At its center lies a two-story pavilion offering panoramic lake views.

• **Large Waterwheel & Windmill**: A 10-meter-tall waterwheel and a colorful five-colored windmill serve as iconic photo spots, especially during the spring tulip season.

• **Geumgul Cave**: A former gold mine from the Japanese colonial era, now repurposed into a whimsical illuminated tunnel with dragon statues.

• **Winter Ice Wall**: During the winter months, an spectacular artificial ice wall is created on the cliffs, attracting thousands of tourists.

• **Dulle-gil Trekking**: Walk the 3.5km loop trail around the lake, which is well-lit at night for a safe and romantic evening stroll.

• **Songhae Exhibition Hall**: Visit the hall to see a collection of personal items and career milestones of the beloved broadcaster (Open 09:00-18:00, Closed Mondays).

• **Enjoy the Musical Fountain**: Watch the water dance to music, with shows operating frequently throughout the day and evening from spring to fall.

• **Photography in the Tulip Garden**: Visit in early to mid-April to capture thousands of blooming tulips surrounding the windmill and lake entrance.
