Overview
Dongpirang Wall Painting Village is one of Tongyeong's most famous landmarks. Located on a hill overlooking Gangguan Port, this once-struggling neighborhood was transformed into a vibrant outdoor art gallery. Colorful murals decorate the walls of every alleyway, offering a stark yet beautiful contrast to the deep blue sea of Tongyeong. It is widely considered the pioneer of wall painting villages in South Korea.
History
The name 'Dongpirang' means "east cliff." In 2007, the village was scheduled to be demolished to create a park on the site of a historic fortification from the Joseon era. However, a local civic group organized a mural contest, inviting art students and citizens to paint the walls. The resulting beauty attracted so many tourists that the city government changed its plan, deciding to preserve the village as a cultural and artistic asset instead.
